We’ve been working hard to pull together various tools onto our website that will help our clients to not only browse available properties and find the right home, but also to discover more about them. Each month we’ll be focusing on one of these features.

Walkscore is an very interesting tool that has gotten a lot of media attention recently and we are excited to add the service to our website. Walk Score uses an algorithm to calculate the distance from any address to amenities like restaurants, grocery stores, movie theaters and Schools. It displays these amenities on a map so at a glance you can quickly answers to important questions like: What’s the nearest grocery store? How far is my nearest coffee fix?

We have setup our new website to display the Walkscore map under each property detail page beneath What is near by.

You can click on the arrows to scroll through further amenities. If you are really interested you can enlarge the map by clicking on view bigger map on the top right hand corner and browse further afield.

Walkscore also provides a number between 0 and 100 that measures the walkability on any address. We realise that here in Suffolk, walking is usually not an option, but Walkscore provides a rating on how walkable any home is.

Walk Score    Description
90–100    Walker’s Paradise — Daily errands do not require a car.
70–89       Very Walkable — Most errands can be accomplished on foot.
50–69        Somewhat Walkable — Some amenities within walking distance.
25–49        Car-Dependent — A few amenities within walking distance.
0–24          Car-Dependent — Almost all errands require a car.

It”s no surprise that most of the homes in the Suffolk area are Car-Dependant! It’s an interesting tool not only for those looking for a home but also for any home owner to see what is nearby. We hope you have fun using it on our site.

Today Show – Is renting now better than buying?

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Did anyone see the Today Show this morning? It was interesting to see their section titled ‘Is renting now better than buying?’

Watch it here –

Visit for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

I’ve been asked this question many times over the last few years. I feel there isn’t a definative answer and it certainly depends on individuals personal situations and goals. On the Today Show they summarised arguments on both sides as follows:

Reason to Rent

  • Easy In, Easy Out
  • Someone else will fix it
  • Poor Credit

Reasons to Buy

  • Record Low Mortgage rates
  • Option to live in a nice neighborhood (schools, family)

I agree with their statements but think there are a lot more that have to be applied to either side dependant on the individual’s situation. If this is something you are thinking about, come and speak to us here at Cross Realty today. As we offer both rental property and real estate professionals for buyers/sellers, we are able to help you weigh up your options and give you the tailored support you need.

Let me know your thoughts on this debate!

Cross Realty Announcement

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Dear Friends:

I am writing to tell you about some very exciting changes taking place with our family’s real estate business. Beginning Sept.7, we have decided to trade as Cross Realty, an independent real estate company with new signs, a powerful new website and new online tools, to better serve our clients in this Internet world.

As you know, Cross Realty purchased a RE/MAX franchise in 2000 for the listing and sales side of our business. At the time, it was the right thing to do.RE/MAX had many technologically advanced tools to help promote sales, and it was one of the first companies to have an online presence featuring national Multiple Listing Services, or MLS.

Today, MLS is everywhere on the web, and 90 percent of homebuyers are conducting their searches online. What buyers and sellers need—now more than ever— are knowledgeable, experienced realtors and brokers to help them sort through the information to make a smart choice.

That’s what we do best at Cross Realty—and you can continue to count on us as “Your Trusted Hometown Professionals”.

As we re-launch Cross Realty, we are excited about:

  • Serving the Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina area
  • Providing the latest online search capabilities and tools to help you hone in on your property needs
  • Sharing our in-depth knowledge of the local marketplace
  • Putting you in touch with community resources, contractors and relocation services to help with your transition
  • Continuing our family tradition of supporting our local community and being there for our neighbors
  • Making the business of buying and selling easy—and successful

Wouldn’t you rather do business with a locally-owned company with ties to the area? I appreciate your support of our company throughout the years, and you may be assured of receiving the same professional guidance with all of your property needs in the future.

I hope you are as thrilled as I am that Suffolk’s old friend, Cross Realty, is back!

Please be sure to find out more about our new capabilities at

We are “Always Open…Online”. This is where today’s buyers are finding our listings.

With warm regards,

Harry Lee Cross, III, Broker/Owner

We are now just a few days away from the first Crab Pickin’ event held by Suffolk 60 Care. On Saturday, September 11th from 5-9pm, this fun family event will be held outside the Hilton Garden Inn at Constant’s Wharf in downtown Suffolk. There will be all you can eat crab (of course), sides, desserts, 2 beer/wine tickets and great music! We’ll be there rain or shine, so come on by to pick a little crab, get a little messy and celebrate with your neighbors!

Suffolk 60 Care is a local women’s organization that focuses on community volunteering within Suffolk. I recently became a member of Suffolk 60 Care and have really enjoyed the women I’ve met. I will be helping to set-up for the Crab Pickin’ and enjoying the food there with my husband. So if you see me out there, please introduce yourself.

I look forward to seeing you there!
